In the heart of Somerville, MA, Mudflat Studio is creating more than beautiful ceramics, it’s creating a place where artists can learn, create, and connect with their community. When it came time to improve the studio’s heating and cooling, Mudflat partnered with Aspinwall Plumbing & Heating to find an energy-efficient solution that would provide year-round comfort while helping control operating costs.
The result is a modern Lennox Dual Fuel Hybrid system that delivers efficient heating and cooling throughout the studio. Using Lennox equipment was an easy choice, but we were able to mold the deal with a $38,000 Mass Save rebate that helped make the project even more worthwhile.
A Smart Solution for a Creative Space
Mudflat Studio is a busy working environment, with artists and students spending countless hours in the facility throughout the year. Maintaining a comfortable environment is important not only for the people using the space, but also for a facility where temperatures can have an impact on the creative process and day-to-day operations.
Aspinwall Plumbing recommended a high-efficiency Lennox, Dual-Fuel Hybrid heat pump system designed to provide reliable heating during New England’s coldest months while also delivering efficient air conditioning during the summer. The Dual-Fuel system is a first stage heat pump, and second stage gas fired heating system. This type of system is ideal for new England weather. The heat pump will work down to outdoor temperatures around 35-40 degrees F. Once the outdoor temperature drops below this balance point, the gas fired furnace will turn on, to heat the space.
The system allowed Mudflat to improve comfort throughout the facility without having to think about outdoor temperature settings. They can simply set their thermostat to a comfortable setting, and the equipment does the rest!

The new system gives Mudflat Studio the ability to efficiently heat and cool its space throughout the year, creating a more comfortable environment for its artists, instructors, students, and visitors.

This significant incentive helped reduce the overall investment in the project and made upgrading to a more energy-efficient heating and cooling system an even smarter decision.
